cheap and reliable BB52

This SM-BB52 is getting phased out and still believe that this is the easient in the shimano lineup to throw away and get a new one incase BB gets worn out.

Hollowtech II outboard bearings

Well made, work as expected. MTB specific according to Shimano. Notes: made in Malaysia (not a problem); generously packed with Shimano grease (including for the spindle). They now come with the standard 3 plastic/ fiber spacers and a thinner shim that I'm fairly sure wasn't included in the box a few years ago. I needed to use the thin shim/ washer as well to get a (nearly) flush fit on a hybrid TRETA. Bought two, one as a spare. One never knows when they'll be out of stock.
Finally Shimano will shoot me (but hey we be 'third world thrifty') – it is possible (I've done it) to carefully remove the seals, flush out water, repack the bearings and get a bit more life out of the bearings till one gets replacements.
