Surly Krampus Hardtail (Nose Drip Curry)
SUR-BK-KRMPS-SUS-MD-YLW
A plus-tire hardtail for the rider who wants a mountain bike that floats over rough trail without feeling slow, proving that big tires and quick handling aren't mutually exclusive.
Overview
Krampus was the first "plus" bike to reach the market, and it changed how a lot of riders think about trail bikes. Running large-volume 29" x 2.6" tires on wide rims gives it a ride quality that smooths out chatter most hardtails transmit straight to the rider, while dispelling the myth that bigger tires automatically mean a sluggish bike.
This build pairs a 100% Surly CroMoly steel frame with Natch tubing and a RockShox 35 Gold RL fork delivering 120mm of travel. The drivetrain is a 12-speed Shimano Deore XT setup (SL-M8100 shifter, RD-M8100 derailleur) running an 11-51T cassette through a Deore M6100 crank, with Tektro Gemini hydraulic disc brakes and WTB ST i30 TCS 2.0 tubeless-ready wheels wrapped in Surly's own Dirt Wizard tires.
It's built for riders who spend real time on singletrack and want the modern trail standards — a dropper-post-compatible frame, thru-axles, and a suspension fork — without stepping up to a full-suspension bike.
Why You'll Like It
Modern trail standards built in
A 44mm headtube, Gnot-Boost rear spacing, thru-axles, and dropper post compatibility mean this frame is ready for the components riders actually run on the trail today.
Clearance for genuinely big tires
Room for 29" x 3" tires means you can run even more volume than the stock 2.6" setup if you want maximum float and traction.
Compatible with the mountain bike parts bin
Standard mountain bike component widths and mounts mean upgrades and replacements are straightforward — just skip rim brakes, which this frame doesn't support.
A 12-speed Shimano Deore XT drivetrain
The 11-51T cassette gives a wide enough range to climb steep fire roads and still have top-end speed on descents.
A suspension fork tuned for trail riding
120mm of travel from the RockShox 35 Gold RL takes the edge off rock gardens and roots without the weight or complexity of a full-suspension frame.
Who Is It For?
Krampus is built for riders who want a genuine trail bike — one that handles singletrack, technical climbs, and loose descents with confidence, not a bike that's merely capable off-road.
For Indian trail riders, the combination of big-volume tires and a steel frame is particularly useful on the mixed rock, loose dirt, and root-strewn terrain common in places like the Himalayan foothills and the Western Ghats, where extra traction and a forgiving ride matter more than outright weight.
It also works well as a step-up bike for a rider moving from a basic hardtail into more serious trail riding, since the plus-size tires forgive line choice mistakes that would punish a narrower-tired bike.
Good to Know
Set up the WTB TCS 2.0 wheels tubeless to get the most out of the Dirt Wizard tires' traction and puncture resistance.
The dropper-post-compatible frame means you can add a dropper post later without needing a different frame.
Because the frame is rigid at the rear, focus your suspension setup time on getting the RockShox 35 Gold RL's sag and rebound dialed for your weight and riding style.
