Overview
Cross-Check was Surly's first complete bike, and it earned that spot by refusing to specialize. It was built as a dependable commuter and cargo hauler years before "gravel bike" was a category, and it still does that job better than most bikes designed specifically for it.
The frame is Surly's double-butted 4130 CroMoly steel, TIG-welded and ED coated for corrosion resistance, paired with a matching CroMoly fork with front rack eyelets. This build runs an 8-speed Microshift Acolyte Xpress drivetrain with a Samox square-taper crank and a wide-range 12-42T cassette, Tektro M730 mechanical disc-style cantilever brakes, and 700c Alex DH19 wheels wrapped in 35mm Kenda Kwest tires.
It makes the most sense for riders who want one bike that can handle the daily commute, a loaded grocery run, and a weekend dirt road ride without switching equipment.
